The Best Friends Are Born for Adversity
[image: The Best Friends Are Born for Adversity]
A friend loves at all times and a brother (or sister) is born for
adversity. (Proverbs 17:17)
So few of these kinds of relationships seem to exist in the world, even
within churches. People like to get together and have casual fun, but walk
(or run) away if a situation or friendship gets too difficult or might cost
us too much. I wonder if many of us have lost sense of what true friendship
is meant to be.
How might this Proverb come alive again in the life of the church?
“And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us ... more »
Is Faith in Jesus a Leap in the Dark?
Is Christianity a leap in the dark, a calculated wager based on the
possibility of there being a heaven and a hell? No, saving faith has really
tasted the beauty of Christ.

How to Help the Suicidal
[image: How to Help the Suicidal]
Fewer topics provoke more fear and trembling than suicide. Just the word
itself fills one with sadness and heartache. Writing on the topic somehow
seems even worse. There are difficult questions around every bend and
tender feelings at every intersection. In fact, I would venture to say that
there is nothing that inhibits lay counseling efforts more than the fear of
someone uttering the word “suicide.”
But we cannot let our fear and sadness over a dark and difficult issue keep
us from moving toward one another. Therefore, it is with clarity,

Online Friendships Are Not Enough
[image: Online Friendships Are Not Enough]
Online friendships can be dangerous.
Our ability to instantly connect with people through the Web, regardless of
their location, has been changing the way we view and conduct
relationships. And due to a technological advancement known as social
media, we now have countless ways to engage different people without ever
leaving our home or inviting anyone over.
One popular medium for connecting intimately online with strangers is
Facebook Groups. It can be a kind of secret underground world within the
platform, and if you’re not a part of on... more »
How the End Comes
As we look up the western steeps
That make this path a valley where
We walk on solid stone, there leaps
Sure footed like a mountain flare
This golden edge, this line of light,
All jagged on a wall of stone,
Down, down with every crag as bright
Above the line as if there shone
A mount of fire spreading down
These cliffs to clothe the valley here
With one enfolding gown
Of light until the sun appear
Above the dismal eastern rim
And blast, as in the twinkling of
An eye, the final scraps of dim
And gloomy ground with gleaming love,
And banish every shadow in
This wor... more »
Commitment Killed a Part of Me
[image: Commitment Killed a Part of Me]
We had only known each other six months. But on the shore of Lake Michigan,
I asked Laura to marry me and she said “yes.” Without a hitch, the popular
passion of engagement hit me immediately. We called everyone and relived
each moment with all of our friends and family from start to finish.
However, something else hit me almost as quickly. As much as I was
absolutely taken by this woman, within a few days I felt my feelings sink.
That’s right, on the other side of proposing I was feeling my feelings
change.
I was shocked. I was terrified. I... more »
Psalm 100: How Can We Obey from the Heart?
The hardest commands in the Bible are not the commands to serve, to
abstain, or to forgive. They’re the commands to feel. How do we rejoice
when we don’t feel any joy?

Glory in Defeat
I love sports, at least in part, because of the feeling of sharing in the
glory of my team’s victory. As a sports fan, I get a real high and feel a
deep joy when my team wins. Sports are all about glory. It’s also about the
team and their fans joyfully sharing in that glory. Because sports are
about glory, it’s also about God. All glory belongs to God, and the glory
of sports is no different.
When we share in the celebration of our team’s victory, we share in the
glory. And as Christians, this kind of glorying should not be removed from
our glorying in the... more »
Graduates, What Is God Calling You to Do?
[image: Graduates, What Is God Calling You to Do?]
The school year is ending and many are contemplating a new season of life.
They are getting ready to head into the “real world” (where you actually
get paid to work!) or perhaps starting to contemplate college and careers.
If you are in this place you may wonder, “What is God calling me to do?” To
answer this question you might decide to wait for a blinding light and
audible voice. That approach has worked for some (albeit a very select
few), but more than likely God will reveal your calling in a more ordinary
way.
God is in the d... more »
Nine Prayers for the Not-Yet-Married
[image: Nine Prayers for the Not-Yet-Married]
Singleness can be a long, lonely, and confusing road, especially when it’s
unwanted. Through most of my twenties, I felt like I was *born* wanting to
be married. God finally gave me a wife a little more than a year ago, but
not before walking with me through a winding decade of temptation and
sometimes failure, of waiting, wanting, and wondering why not yet.
Over many years, I learned that God does not guarantee temporary joys for
his children like physical health, marriage, success at work, or children.
And that’s because he is utterly,... more »

Dads, Your Children Need You
[image: Dads, Your Children Need You]
There is a ubiquitous story told in prison ministry circles that speaks to
the state of fatherhood in our day. One year, a group decided to provide
cards for inmates on Mother’s Day. The response was overwhelming, as nearly
all the inmates showed up to sign and send cards to their mothers. The
event was so successful that the group decided to do it again on Father’s
Day.
Almost no one participated.
The point of this story? Well, it depends on who you ask. However, at the
heart of the discrepancy is fatherlessness, both in terms of the men who ... more »
The Most Famous Mouthpiece
[image: I Can Do All Things, Even Lose egxyufay]
The most famous mouthpiece in the NBA — maybe in league history — went
flying in frustration. It inadvertently hit a fan near the scorer’s table.
A referee assessed a technical foul and pointed his finger toward the
locker room, inciting roaring jeers from the crowd of 20,562.
With that, Stephen Curry’s night was over and, with it, so were the Golden
State Warriors’ already slim chances to claw back into a nightmarish Game 6
of the NBA Finals in Cleveland on Friday night. The Cavaliers went on to
win, 115–101, and tie the series at... more »
Let the Stepchildren Come to Me
[image: Let the Stepchildren Come to Me]
Father’s Day gives us stepchildren a peek into a fantasy: happier lives,
deeper relationships, warmer memories, cherished photographs lining the
walls of social media. Families still together, faithful dads, strong dads,
healthy dads, dads who didn’t leave, dads who loved their wives enough to
keep their families together. We may not have those things. We may have
bitterness. Or jealousy. Or loneliness.
On Father’s Day, our fantasies can be overcome by the reminders of our
step-ness: sermons on the importance of fathers, a mandatory lunch wit... more »

The Light at the End of the Spiral
[image: The Light at the End of the Spiral]
This past month my newsfeed has been filled with posts lamenting the
downward spiral of secular culture. The hottest topics in Christian circles
seem to be the U.S. presidential candidates and the turmoil over
transgender bathrooms. And the entire country is lamenting the tragedy in
Orlando. Certainly there is much to be dismayed over. And it’s good to
think through and process the implications of various laws and policy
decisions. But as believers in Christ, do we differ in any significant ways
from our culturally conservative, but unbeli... more »
